FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why wool socks?

Wool socks are unique in their ability to keep feet warm, whether the sock is wet or dry. Wool socks can provide critical warmth to feet and help prevent frostbite. Wool provides extra cushion for long walks and life-saving warmth when worn in shoes/boots of virtually any condition. For a vast majority of homeless, their feet are their transportation...and wool socks protect feet from the harshest outdoor elements.

Why new socks?

We purposely source new, high quality merino wool socks to be distributed, for free, to the homeless in Minneapolis. Why new? Practically speaking, we can guarantee that the socks will be of high quality and provide the required protection needed for feet to survive outside in our harsh Minnesota winters. But additionally, we intentionally use only new, high quality socks because of the message of caring and hope it delivers to the recipients. For many of our homeless, their new wool socks may be the only "new, first time use" clothing they own. With this simple gift, we want them know that someone cares, they have value, and there is hope for the future.

How much of my donation goes to the homeless?

100% of your donation is used to purchase the wool socks and freight to ship them to Minnesota. The Warm Feet Project relies solely on volunteers for all administration, marketing, re-distribution and outreach.

Is my donation tax-deductible?

The Warm Feet project is a 501(c)3 charitable organization, so all donations are tax deductible. We are required to provide receipts for any gift over $250. However if you would like a receipt for your donation, please complete our contact us form.

How much do the socks cost?

We have a wholesale rate with Smartwool which means we pay $13 per pair. Each pair of socks is Made in the USA, with wool sourced from New Zealand.

How are the socks distributed?

We have Partnered with a homeless outreach charity named "In Love, Word and Deed” (ILWD) here in Minneapolis. ILWD is a non-facility, faith-based 501(c)3 Christian ministry dedicated to providing food and clothing to the poor and homeless in the Twin Cities area. They distribute The Warm Feet Project’s wool sock donations at a monthly handout event downtown, via direct street outreach activities, and to the homeless at the various homeless shelters operating in and around Minneapolis and St. Paul.
